| The good, the bad, and the ugly ... at least from our point of view!
NOTE: The vast majority of these reviews have been written by me, Greg Schloesser. Many of the games reviewed were received complimentary as 'review' copies. This in no way influences my objectivity and opinions expressed. |
10 DAYS IN AFRICA / EUROPE / U.S.A.
Posted On: 2006-01-18
Plan the perfect vacation in this series of games from designers Alan Moon & Aaron Weissblum. "Rack-O with a geography lesson".
A CASTLE FOR ALL SEASONS
Posted On: 2009-09-29
Many of the mechanisms in this latest creation from Inka and Markus Brand are quite creative, giving the game a novel feel. While some of the mechanisms are familiar, they are blended together in a fashion that feels fresh and new. Further, the designers have succeeded in creating a game that is filled with tough choices, considerable tension, and a variety of possible strategies, all wound together in a tight sixty minute time frame. That is quite an achievement.
A DOG'S LIFE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Euro Games goes to the dogs! Well, no ... it isn't that bad of a game, but the theme does involve doing what dogs do best.
ABENTEUER MENSHEIT
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Travel back to the dawn of mankind in this latest installment of the seemingly endless Settlers of Catan series.
AD ACTA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Pushing papers in a government bureaucracy has never been so much fun! This limited edition release from Bewitched Games is quite fun and challenging.
AGE OF EMPIRES III
Posted On: 2007-12-29
This is a fine design, one that can be played over and over again and still offer a fresh feel and new options to explore. Age of Empires III is clearly Drover’s best design, which hopefully bodes will for his new company.
AGE OF EXPLORATION
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Exploration, peril and discovery on the high seas in the 15th & 16th centuries in this TimJim and Prism Games release.
AGE OF STEAM
Posted On: 2005-11-02
Age of Steam is an outstanding game, one which is very tightly organized and requires precision play.
AGE OF STEAM
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Designer Martin Wallace takes the system pioneered in Lancashire Rails and Volldampf to new heights with this excellent rail building and shipping game.
AGORA BARCELONA
Posted On: 2008-08-28
The game is pleasant enough, but there is nothing here about which to get terribly excited. It is yet another area control game, a genre of which I am quite fond. However, Agora Barcelona doesn’t add much, if anything, to the field of work.
AIRSHIPS
Posted On: 2008-08-28
The game does have much in common with Tom Lehmann’s To Court the King. The objective is to acquire cards that give you greater flexibility and increase your chances of acquiring even better cards. In a sense, it is an engine building game, but on a vastly lighter scale.
ALCHEMIST
Posted On: 2007-10-04
The theme certainly is familiar:
a group of Adepts competing in a contest of Alchemists, each hoping to concoct and replicate the most valuable potions.
Alchemist, however,
is a game that doesn’t appear to have stamina, and is destined to suffer the same fate as the “science†of alchemy.
ALHAMBRA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
The "Year of the Remake" continues with the release of Alhambra, a new version of Dirk Henn's Stimmt So.
AMUN-RE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Herr Knizia revisits the land of ancient Egypt in this welcome return to his "meatier" side.
AMYITIS
Posted On: 2008-09-25
If you have been enjoying games in the Ystari line such as Mykerinos, Ys, and Yspahan, then you will find much to like in Amyitis. While not as deep as the company’s star performer Caylus, the game is filled with a multitude of options to pursue, and decisions that will often cause angst and consternation.
ANASAZI
Posted On: 2009-08-11
Anasazi's short duration cannot overcome its flaws and general blasé feel. There simply isn’t anything exciting here. It is truly disappointing that the game couldn’t have done more justice to such a fascinating culture and subject.
ANATHEMA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Based on the traditional card game Casino, this APE Games release uses dark artwork to evoke the atmosphere of the Salem witch trials.
ANGKOR
Posted On: 2007-05-22
ANIMALIA
Posted On: 2009-01-16
Serious gamers will not likely find much here to entice them, but clearly the game is not targeted for that market. Rather, it is aimed at families, and in that market it appears to fit quite well.
ANNO 1503
Posted On: 2007-06-12
Set in the exciting period when Europeans began their historic voyages of discovery, Anno 1503 cast players in the role of the brave settlers who were attempting to establish colonies in the newly discovered lands.
ANTLER ISLAND
Posted On: 2008-02-18
AQUA ROMANA
Posted On: 2007-05-23
Similar in feel to Dirk Henn's Metro, Aqua Romana is one of the better games in the Queen line of games.
ARCHAEOLOGY
Posted On: 2007-12-05
Archaeology is a fun game that is perfectly suited for families, and as a light filler for folks who take their gaming a bit more seriously.
ARK OF THE COVENANT
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Ark of the Covenant uses virtually the same game system as Carcassonne, quite likely the most popular European-style games since Settlers of Catan (on which Settlers of Zarahemla is based). The game is set in the time period of the Old Testament, with the Israelites developing the region by building cities, temples, roads and raising sheep.
ARMORY
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Set in a fantasy realm, the excitement is unfortunately lacking in this card game from M.E.K. Games.
ARS MYSTERIORUM
Posted On: 2006-01-16
Ars Mysteriorum is fun, filled with interesting and significant decisions, and has many head-slapping “Arrghh!†moments.
ATLANTIC STORM - The Bad
Posted On: 2005-07-11
The Bad. Review # 2, this one by Jay Ouzts, offers a different ... and very negative ... view on the game. Read at your own risk!
ATLANTIC STORM - The Good
Posted On: 2005-07-11
The Good. Oh, no ... not another card game! Actually, though, this Avalon Hill release is quite good as players try to sink and/or save Allied convoys from the dangerous Deutsche Kriegsmarine during WWII.
ATLAS & ZEUS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
ATTILA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
The Germanic tribes are invading (well, migrating) into Europe in this challenging game from designer Karl Heinz Schmiel.
BANG!
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Get ready for a good, old-fashioned, wild west shooutout that is more fun than a barroom brawl!
BASARI
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Take a journey through a Middle-Eastern bazaar in this tense game of bartering for riches.
BATTLE BALL
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Its smash-mouth, bone-crunching football in this fun, fast, futuristic game from Hasbro.
BATTLE LORE
Posted On: 2007-09-12
Battle Lore has combined the best aspects of the series into a fast, playable and imminently enjoyable game, one that can be expanded ad infinitum into the future. The fantasy setting may be off-putting to some, but it does provide a seemingly endless realm of possibilities, limited only by the creativity of the designer and the pocketbook of Days of Wonder.
BEETLEZ
Posted On: 2006-04-28
A fast-paced game of scurrying pests out to eat your food. While the game play isn't as revolting as this sounds, it still isn't very appetizing.
BEFORE THE WIND
Posted On: 2008-01-08
Before the Wind is a fine design, filled with tension, time pressure and important decisions. It is one of the better releases from Phalanx games, and an impressive debut from Thorsten Landsvogt.
BIG CITY
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Another entry into the crowded field of city development. But guess what? This fairly simple yet stunningly beautiful game is actually pretty good.
BIG KINI
Posted On: 2007-04-25
Big Kini is one of those pleasant, surprise gems that helps make Essen well-worth attending. I honestly didn’t expect to be impressed … but I am. In fact, it falls squarely in the top tier of games from the 2005 convention. In a game that involves exploration and discovery, the best discovery was the game itself!
BIG TOP
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Head to the Big Top for a fun game of managing circus performers and collecting gate receipts.
BIN 'FA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Fans of Go or Hexagony might well find this derivative appealing, but most others may want to pass.
BOHNANZA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Bean farming in this wacky yet challenging card game from Uwe Rosenberg and Amigo Spiele of Germany and Rio Grande Games.
BRASS
Posted On: 2008-01-24
Brass is a deep strategy game that will take many, many games to explore and fully probe its depths. That seems to be a hallmark of Wallace designs, and he has truly become a master at producing these strategy-filled games.
BREWMASTER
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Ready to brew a good ale or lager? Try your hand at crafting an award-winning beer in this light, yet fun game.
BRIDGES OF SHANGRI-LA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Travel to the enchanted land of Shangri-La in this tense game from Leo Colovini that is filled with touch choices.
BUX
Posted On: 2007-10-12
Bux seems like a clever game, but, sadly, it quickly breaks down due to numerous flaws. Once these are recognized, the game ceases to be fun, and strategies become very linear.
CAESAR & CLEOPATRA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Caesar and Cleopatra battle for the loyalties of the Roman patriarchs in this entertaining card game from Kosmos.
CAIRO
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Do we really need another flicking game? Usually, my response would be "no", but this game of building pyramids along the Nile adds some strategy elements that make it enjoyable and worthwhile.
CANNONBALL COLONY
Posted On: 2009-01-22
Cannonball Colony is quite challenging, and is well worth investigating, particularly for those whe enjoy abstract games.
CARCASSONNE: HUNTERS & GATHERERS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Travel back in time to the days prior to the medieval city of Carcassonne, when man was scurrying about in search of berries and wild beasts.
CARCASSONNE: THE CITY
Posted On: 2005-11-02
This version of Carcassonne is the most strategic of the lot and is quite fun. In addition, it is certainly the most visually appealing, with wooden walls and towers resulting in an impressive spectacle as the game progresses.
CARROUSEL
Posted On: 2007-10-03
Carrousel is game involving strong puzzle aspects and mental gyrations. It requires visualizing the effect’s of a potential move … and doing it quickly.
CARTAGENA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
The 'Running of the Pirates'! This fast and easy game is reminiscent of Hare and Tortoise and has proven quite popular.
CASH 'N GUNS
Posted On: 2007-10-24
Quite simply, Cash 'N Guns is a game I shouldn’t like … but I do. Why? Well, plain and simple, it is fun. There is ample opportunity to ham-it-up and role-play your character, and there is something wickedly fun about aiming those foam rubber guns at your opponents!
CASTLE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
This Bruno Faiduti release may not be laden with strategy, but it is good fun nonetheless.
CASTLE MERCHANTS
Posted On: 2007-11-07
Luck does play a significant role, but there is more in Castle Merchants than initially meets the eye.
CATAN GEOGRAPHIES: GERMANY
Posted On: 2009-05-14
CAVE TROLL
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Yet another dungeon exploration game, filled with adventurers, dwarves, elves, monsters and treasures. When, oh, when will this theme go out of vogue? Apparently, no time soon as designers and companies keep cranking out titles with these mythical settings. Fortunately, this one is a keeper.
CHANG CHENG
Posted On: 2008-10-21
I am well pleased with Chang Cheng. It is a middle-weight game filled with a continuous stream of important decisions. Shrewd play and clever tactics are richly rewarded. Yet, the game is easy to learn and should be accessible and enjoyable for both families and more serious gamers.
CHICAGO POKER
Posted On: 2008-10-22
Poker purists will likely not enjoy Chicago Poker, as it does significantly alter the game. However, in my opinion, it also makes it more “friendly†and easier to play, yet still maintains some of the key elements of the traditional card game.
ChiZo Rising
Posted On: 2006-06-11
While I typically avoid the "collectible" genre of games, I must admit that ChiZo Rising has me hooked. It is fun and challenging, and truly doesn’t require an ongoing outlay of cash to keep me satisfied.
CINEPLEXITY
Posted On: 2007-08-11
CLASH OF THE GLADIATORS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
With the right attitude, this game can be fun ... especially if you have a lust for blood, a desire to test your worth in the arena … and it is very late at night!
CLASH OF THE LIGHT SABERS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Wait a minute? Is this Hasbro releasing a decent strategy game? You bet!
CLIPPERS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Clippers is the latest evolution of Alan Moon's Sante Fe and, in spite of some problems with the components, is quite good.
COMUNI
Posted On: 2009-01-22
Comuni is definitely a game worthy of more than just one look. For me, it improved with experience, and I have come to appreciate the various mechanisms.
CONQUEST OF THE FALLEN LANDS
Posted On: 2008-01-03
Conquest of the Fallen Lands is quite good and has a fresh feel. While the objective is similar, it is not your typical attack and conquer game.
CORRUPTION
Posted On: 2005-07-11
In this Bruno Faidutti release, players represent shady businessmen, politicians and mobsters, all trying to get a piece of the lucrative construction business.
CORSAIRS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Load up the cannons, mateys, and fire the 'banana' shot! Pirates on the high seas in this entertaining release from Rio Grande Games.
COSMIC ENCOUNTER
Posted On: 2005-07-11
This is a gaming classic, originally released by Eon Games. Avalon Hill version has vastly improved the components, but is the game the same or better?
CRAZY BLUFF
Posted On: 2006-03-27
Crazy Bluff is almost completely devoid of any strategy, and as the name implies, virtually solely dependent upon the element of bluff. That usually translates into “avoidance†for me.
CRYSTAL FAIRE
Posted On: 2008-11-12
It is with great sadness that I must give Crystal Faire a thumbs-down. I have thoroughly enjoyed the designer’s previous two releases, and had high hopes for this title. If there is a hidden level of strategy or understanding just below the surface, I simply haven’t grasped it.
CUBA
Posted On: 2007-12-19
The influences of several games – most notably Pillars of the Earth, Caylus and Puerto Rico – are clearly evident in Cuba. However, the game is different enough to provide another alternative with a similar level of strategy and complexity.
DARJEELING
Posted On: 2008-04-17
Darjeeling has some original elements, and a reasonably fresh feel that makes it enjoyable to play. It is a pleasant surprise from a veteran designer that is just my cup of tea.
DEFENDERS OF CLAY ART
Posted On: 2008-12-09
There are numerous problems with the game, the most glaring being an overly complicated scoring system that detracts from what should be the most fun aspect: sculpting clay figures. However, even if the scoring system were modified, the rest of the game still fails to deliver and satisfy.
DER ELEFANT IM PORZELLANLADEN
Posted On: 2008-11-19
DER WEISSE LOTUS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Even the best things in life can make you sick if you get too much of it. Sadly, Der Weisse Lotus offers one clever mechanism which is beaten to death.
DIE BAUMEISTER VON ARKADIA
Posted On: 2009-01-22
While Die Baumeister von Arkadia doesn’t mark a return to “gamers” games for Ravensburger, but it is a step beyond most of the fare they have offered in recent years. For me, that is a good thing!
DIE NEUEN ENTDECKER
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Klaus Teuber revamps Entdecker, one of the games originally envisioned as part of the Settlers of Catan trilogy.
DIE SAULON VON VENEDIG
Posted On: 2009-02-19
While the water in the lagoon (so-to-speak) isn’t terribly deep, at least it isn’t polluted as it is in the actual Venice! What we have here is an entertaining game that requires some thought and planning. Expect more and you may be disappointed.
DIE SIEBEN WEISEN
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Marrying some elements of Taj Mahal and Ohne Furcht und Adel, this Reiner Stockhausen release is quite the fantasy journey.
DIE WEINHANDLER
Posted On: 2006-08-24
Just like a good glass of wine, Die Weinhändler is full-bodied and satisfies the palate.
DILBERT: THE BOARD GAME
Posted On: 2007-07-02
Dilbert: The Board Game, designed by
Eric Lang, is an attempt to recreate the comic in a board game format.
I fear it will only truly appeal to die-hard Dilbert fans, which is quite likely the target market anyway. All others are best advised to remain out of the office.
DOMAINE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
While maintaining many aspects of Löwenherz, its forerunner, Domaine does offer some added twists and plays in half the time.
DON
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Although the game has nothing to do with the mafioso theme, it is nonetheless an intriguing and challenging auction game from designer Michael Schacht.
DRAGON DELTA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Robo Rally meets Twixt in this chaotic and exciting release from EuroGames and designer Roberto Fraga.
DRAGON'S GOLD
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Slay the dragons and split the loot! This latest from Bruno Faidutti involves some nice negotiation and deal-making elements.
EL GRANDE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
The German "Game of the Year" in 1996, designed by Wolfgang Kramer, lives up to its award winning reputation.
ELFENLAND
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Dive into a fantasy world of unicorns, trolls, wild hogs and more in this refreshingly different game from Alan Moon.
ELK FEST
Posted On: 2009-01-22
Elk Fest is a cute diversion, but little more. It is light fun, but with adults, it runs its course quickly.
EN GARDE!
Posted On: 2010-02-11
En Garde is a fun, fast and engaging two-player game that has stood the test of time, at least in terms of today's game market where games have a short shelf life. It has been around since 1993, and hasn't lost any of its luster. This new, more attractive version makes it even more appealing.
ENDEAVOR
Posted On: 2010-02-13
While the game has the theme of nations expanding their empires across the globe, in reality the game is quite abstract. That being said, the game itself is quite engaging and challenging.
EUROPA: 1945 - 2030
Posted On: 2005-07-11
From the ashes of World War II into the 21st Century: can you help create a prosperous European Union and overcome the persistent threat of nationalism?
EVO
Posted On: 2005-07-11
It's 'Survival of the Fittest' in this clever and entertaining evolution game from Philippe Keyaerts, designer of Vinci.
EYE OF HORUS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
The traditional card game Cassino has been given an Egyptial motif in this light, yet entertaining game from Playroom Entertainment.
FACES
Posted On: 2007-08-28
Faces is an excellent party game that keeps everyone engaged and having fun. It is suitable for just about all ages and just about any group. In this case, a picture is certainly worth a thousand words.
FIGARO
Posted On: 2006-12-14
While not filled with deep strategy, there are still some tactics to employ. But the biggest bonus is that the game is fun to play, and it makes for a very good family game.
FINSTERE FLURE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Finstere Flure continues the story began in Fische, Fluppen & Frikadellen. After finding the three fetishes, you rush to France to free the imprisoned fairy from the clutches of the evil Furst Fieso. You must make your way through his sinister fortress and avoid his evil monster. Run for your lives!
FITS
Posted On: 2009-06-25
Tetris the board game. 'Nuff said.
FOSSIL
Posted On: 2005-07-11
The mechanics are very straight-forward and simple, but the strategy is much more compelling in this fossil collecting game from Rio Grande Games.
FRESH FISH
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Friedemann Friese's fascinating, yet previously hard to obtain tile placement game is now back in print in a professional package from Plenary Games.
FUNDSTÜCKE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Friedemann Friese takes us into the world of junk collecting in this entertaining romp filled with randomness.
GALAXY: DARK AGES
Posted On: 2005-07-11
GMT continues its series of re-designs of Reiner Knizia titles. This time, it's a reworking of the popular Titan: The Arena.
GALLOPING PIGS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Racing games come in a wide variety of themes, including bicycles, hot air balloons, boats and even rickshaws. And let’s not forget our friends the animals. The gaming world has been blessed with games based on the racing of horses, dogs, rabbits and tortoises, elephants, hedgehogs and even worms. But pigs? C’mon … when will this all end?
Gang of Four
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Falling into the same family as Tichu, this intriguing card game from the Far East has me hooked!
GERONIMO
Posted On: 2005-07-11
U.S. expansion into the great, un-tamed West in this highly detailed Richard Berg design by Avalon Hill.
GLOBAL POWERS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Global Powers is NOT your average German-style game. It actually bears much more in common with games released by American companies such as Avalon Hill. The game is filled with negotiations, deal-making, voting and cut-throat actions. Not exactly the “family friendly†atmosphere that most European games attempt to capture. Indeed, even the opening sentence in the game’s description warns of its nature: “A politically incorrect game including tactics, agitation …“
GLOBOPOLIS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Globopolis provides us with a look into the world of the future. Sadly, the gaming world still revolves around Monopoly.
GOA
Posted On: 2008-05-01
There are an abundance of choices in Goa, wherein players represent “Portuguese merchants involved in the spice tradeâ€. Players acquire plantations, found and develop colonies, and attempt to extract the greatest yield from their holdings. The goal is to be the wealthiest and most advanced merchant in all of Goa.
GOUDA GOUDA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Mice in your attic! Ravenous creatures race across the attic in pursuit of cheese in this entertaining game aimed squarely at children.
GRAVE ROBBERS
Posted On: 2007-06-03
Possessing the potentially troubling theme of desecrating graves, Grave Robbers doens't offer players many options, much skill, or much excitement. Sadly, Grave Robbers is destined for the grave yard.
GUATEMALA CAFE
Posted On: 2007-08-08
Set in the Central American country of Gautemala, the Guatemala Cafe challenges players to establish plantations, recruit workers, build road networks, and transport their coffee beans to the docks for sale. While this sounds quite involved, it is actually a fairly simple game, and everything is conducted in a very abstract manner.
HAMBURGUM
Posted On: 2007-12-27
Hamburgum won’t provoke the intense competition or sweeping strategies offered in the designer's previous efforts. While that may be disappointing to some gamers, it actually makes the game far more accessible to a wider audience.
HARE AND TORTOISE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Known in Deutschland as Hase und Igel, this 'classic' has been through several editions and is still going strong.
HAVANA
Posted On: 2010-03-24
Havana is considerably lighter than its forerunner Cuba, but still packed with decisions and options. I find it to be a very good middle-weight game that should see lots of play time.
HELL RAIL
Posted On: 2005-07-11
The theme is rather bizarre: You and your opponents are engineers in Hades delivering
souls of the damned to their proper Circles of Hell. As engineers, you have a wide variety of tasks assigned to you, including the building of the actual rail lines, the loading of these damned souls and the successful delivery of your cargo to the proper circles of Hell. Players must be efficient, lest they incur the wrath of their infernal boss, who is notorious for his lack of mercy!
HIGH SOCIETY
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Not just another bidding game ... and it has nothing to do with Mel Brooks. Instead, it is another winner from the popular German game designer Reiner Knizia.
INTRIGE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Nasty, nasty and even more nasty. That's the thrust of Intrige, the back-stabbing, deceitful delight from Stefan Dorra.
IT'S ALIVE!
Posted On: 2007-11-24
If you don’t mind the rather grisly theme, It’s Alive is a fun, fast game of constructing a living being from body parts.
JAMAICA
Posted On: 2008-03-26
I can see Jamaica being a very popular choice for family game night. The game should also prove popular in settings other than with a group of dedicated gamers. Indeed, I think it fits the definition of “gateway†game almost perfectly.
JAVA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
The latest in the Tikal / Torres series from the design team of Kramer & Kiesling. This time, players explore the enchanting island of Java.
KAIVAI
Posted On: 2007-09-20
Kaivai is a rather confusing game that requires players to construct a variety of huts, expand islands, catch and sell fish, grab majorities on islands, and hold celebrations, all with the ultimate goal of earning glory points. The game is aimed squarely at gamers, and will likely appeal to those who enjoy the challenges of performing all of the necessary steps in the proper sequence in order to achieve success. I’m normally one of those gamers. However, for the reasons I have mentioned, Kaivai just fails to hit the mark for me.
KEY HARVEST
Posted On: 2008-04-17
KEY LARGO
Posted On: 2008-04-23
Originally published in three foreign languages by Tilsit back in 2005, the late Paul Randles’ Key Largo has found renewed life with a new, revised edition released by Titanic Games. This spiffy new edition has received an artistic facelift, as well as some rules twists and modifications. The end result, however, is not much different from the original, which may be good news to some and disappointing to others.
KEYDOM
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Richard Breese's limited edition game has some intriguing mechanisms yet worrisome flaws.
KHRONOS
Posted On: 2007-02-16
Khronos is a fantastic first effort by designers Ludovic Vialla and Arnaud Urbon, and I look forward to further trips in their time machine.
KINGSBURG
Posted On: 2008-01-24
In spite of the abundance of dice, there are enough decisions to give Kingsburg a strategy feel, yet they are not too taxing to cause the game to be a mental chore. Further, it is easily learned and understood, allowing novices to compete immediately with more seasoned players. That’s not an easy feat to achieve, but Kingsburg succeeds.
KRIEG UND FRIEDEN
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Gerhard Muller's first foray into the field of game design is original, pretty and intriguing ... yet somehow it doesn't hit the mark.
LA CITTA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
From gardens to cities. Gerd Fenchel, designer of Kraut & Ruben, now tackles the task of building cities in this challenging game released by Kosmos and Rio Grande Games.
LEONARDO DA VINCI
Posted On: 2007-01-15
Leonardo is a fine game, filled with tension, time pressure and tough decisions. Leonardo da Vinci was not only one of the world’s most outstanding inventors, but his namesake game is also one of this year’s top releases.
LETTER FLIP
Posted On: 2006-05-17
Letter Flip is little more than a fancy version of Hangman. Players take turns guessing letters, with the goal of correctly guessing four words listed on their opponent’s card. There is little strategy or clever maneuvers here … it is all guesswork. The result is succinctly unsatisfying.
LIBERTE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Off with their heads! Designer Martin Wallace has created a tense, challenging and entertaining game set during the French Revolution.
LOGISTICO
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Logistico is a mentally challenging game, requiring careful planning, good decisions and optimal coordination and execution. It is another winner from the gaming Dutchman.
LOOT / KORSAR
Posted On: 2006-02-15
Loot is the re-release of Reiner Knizia’s Korsar, which was actually a re-release of his previously titled Pirat. You have to give the good doctor credit, as he is the master of getting his games re-released!
LORDS OF THE SIERRA MADRE

Decision Game's intriguing, yet extremely confusing game set in turn-of-the-century Mexico.
LOST VALLEY
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Explore the western wilderness in search of fabulous riches ... gold, that is! This exploration game from Roland and Tobias Goslar has some drawbacks, but is still an entertaining romp.
LUCCA CITTA
Posted On: 2006-02-22
It is yet another building competition for those palace-crazed, 17th Century Italians. Players compete to construct palaces, with more prestige being earned for multiple windows and for the correct color coordination. Players can also contribute to the building of the city walls and towers, all in an effort to rise to a position of prominence in the town.
LUCKY LOOP
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Are you daring enough to compete in the four air shows, performing all sorts of aerial stunts? Let the dice rolling begin!
M
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Originally designed as a 'convention' game, this one was so good it was released in full form by Abacus Spiele.
MANHATTAN
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Skyscrapers and monsters in the 'Big Apple'. This Spiel des Jahre winner is engaging and nasty.
MARE NOSTRUM
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Is this really a 2-hour version of Civilization? Sadly, no ... but the game is worth playing anyway.
MEDINA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Just another tile placement game? Not on your life! This challenging game from Steffan Dorra uses big, honkin' chunks of wood which make quite a spectacle as the city is re-built.
MEGASTAR
Posted On: 2007-02-13
Megastar may fit just fine within a group that enjoys playing games such as Phase 10 or UNO. It is light, quick, and doesn’t require much, if any thought. For folks looking for games with a little more thought, strategy and control, I’d recommend changing the dial.
MEMOIR '44
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Days of Wonder has provided a wonderful production of Memoir ’44, adapting the simple yet fun-filled game system pioneered in Battle Cry to World War II, with emphasis on the Allied invasion of Normandy.
MERCHANTS OF AMSTERDAM
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Ever been to a Dutch auction? Well, now is your chance in this entertaining and challenging release from Reiner Knizia.
MERIDIAN
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Meridian, seems to have as much, if not more strategic elements than Leo Colonvini's more heralded design Carolus Magnus. Surprisingly, however, there hasn't been much press about this one and I'm not quite sure why. My best guess is that it is fairly abstract and, indeed, some would consider it 'dry'.
MERMAID RAIN
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Sure, the theme may be off-putting to some, but do yourself a favor and get past it. The game underneath the “cutesy” theme is quite good.
METROMANIA
Posted On: 2007-03-21
Metromania is certainly not a bad game. It is decent and has no serious flaws. However it really doesn’t add much new to the genre, and suffers from the same condition that so many other games have succumbed to – namely, that there are other similar games that I enjoy more and have more to offer.
METROPOLYS
Posted On: 2009-01-12
Set in the not-too-distant future, Metropolys casts players as architects are competing to build the tallest and most glamorous buildings in a rapidly growing city. Players will attempt to manipulate matters in their favor so that they can construct their buildings in their preferred neighborhoods and meet their secret objectives.
MEXICA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
In Mexica, Kramer & Kiesling take us many centuries back into the past when the Mayan tribes were just beginning to develop their legendary city of Tenochitlan, which is now present-day Mexico City. This is another winner from the supermen of game design.
MODERN ART
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Players participate in a series of auctions, acquiring works from five up-and-coming artists. Which one will become the next Picasso, the next Rembrandt?
MONEY
Posted On: 2009-02-19
Originally published in the late 1990s, Money has been republished, this time by Gryphon Games. The artwork has been revamped – gone is the South African Krugerrand – and the box has been considerably enlarged. Other than that, the game is faithful to the original. For me, that is not a good thing, as I have never been a fan of the game.
MOW
Posted On: 2010-01-09
MOW will shine, however, is at gatherings with family and friends when good conversation and chatter can be enjoyed while playing a light and entertaining game.
MYSTERY OF THE ABBEY
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Brother Adelmo is dead and foul play is suspected. You are charged with the task of discovering which of the resident monks in this formerly quiet and peaceful abbey is responsible for this evil deed.
NACHO LOCO
Posted On: 2007-07-24
NEW ENGLAND
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Every so often a game is released that contains a mechanism that is so unique that it elicits a collective “Wow!” from most folks in the gaming community. I’m always a bit skeptical to authoritatively declare such mechanisms as original creations since they might have been utilized in some obscure game released in the past of which I am completely unaware. Be that as it may, I do feel that designers Alan Moon and Aaron Weissblum have invented such an original and thoroughly brilliant mechanism in their new release, New England.
NICHT DIE BOHNE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Yet another bean-themed game from Deutschland, but his one has real spunk!
NUR PEANUTS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
This push-your-luck game of dice rolling and property seleciton may be light, but it can be loads of fun.
OHNE FURCHT UND ADEL
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Or is it Citadelles? No matter the name, this is a clever and enjoyable game from designer Bruno Faidutti.
OLYMPIA 2000
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Go for the Gold in this cute, harmless little card game from Steffan Dorra.
OREGON
Posted On: 2008-07-05
Oregon is a fine light-to-middle weight game. It offers players with an abundance of significant choices and strategies. I’m happy to make the journey to the vast wilderness of 19th century Oregon any time!
OSTINDISKA KOMPANIET
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Sailing the high seas in search of riches and profits in this 1992 Swedish Game of the Year by Dan Glimme.
PARTY POOPER
Posted On: 2009-01-22
The slogan on the box declares “Having Fun is the Point”, and I whole-heartedly agree with that declaration as it pertains to party-style games. Sadly, fun is missing from Party Pooper, as the game is decidedly dull and unexciting.
PHOENIX
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Part of the 2-player Euro Games line, the idea here is to get your colors in the correct order. The game is OK ... it just lacks "punch".
PIG PILE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Richard Borg delves into the world of pigs with this light, yet entertaining card game based on an old Finnish game.
PIRATE'S COVE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Head to the seas in search of treasure and booty in this fun romp dripping with pirate atmosphere.
POLITIKA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Tom Clancy's venture into the realm of wargaming proves wanting.
POMPEJI
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Travel back to the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, building the town before the eventual eruption of Mt. Vesuvius puts an end to this highly challening and entertaining game.
POWER BOATS
Posted On: 2009-05-21
As you can surmise from the name, Powerboats deals with racing fast boats. Fortunately, more than the type of object being raced is different, as the game does involve a clever system of adding and removing dice to regulate movement. Is that alone enough to make the game substantially different from the dozens of other games in the genre, thereby making it worthwhile to keep? Sadly, I don’t think so.
PRINCES OF FLORENCE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
No doubt about it ... Wolfgang Kramer is my favorite game designer. He's done it again with this fantastic and challenging game set in renaissance Italy.
PRINCES OF THE RENAISSANCE
Posted On: 2005-11-30
Princes of the Renaissance is a deep, challenging and tense game with a rich mixture of mechanisms and numerous strategies for the players to pursue.
PRINCESS RYAN'S STAR MARINES
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Can you defeat the evil Black Guard and rescue the Princess in this Avalon Hill release?
PROXIMA OBERTURA
Posted On: 2007-08-23
Proxima Obertura is a pleasant game that contains some interesting mechanisms and choices. The rules are simple, making it easy to teach, learn and play, yet there are enough decisions to give players a degree of control over their own fate.
PUEBLO
Posted On: 2006-02-08
Ahh, - Kramer & Kiesling! Just the thought of another game designed by this dynamic duo is enough to get me woozy! Pueblo does not disappoint, and is vintage Kramer & Kiesling.
QUEEN'S NECKLACE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
The two Brunos (Faidutti and Cathalla) have teamed-up to present this fun game of intrigue and greed in the courts of the French king.
QUO VADIS?
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Can you promote your candidates to the Roman Senate and collect the most laurels along the way? Negotiation and deal-making are essential in this Reiner Knizia creation from Mayfair.
R-ECO
Posted On: 2006-12-20
One of the most intriguing of Japon Brand's new offerings is R-ECO, a self-proclaimed card game of “recycling and ecologyâ€. R-ECO places players in the role of garbage collectors, and challenges them to efficiently dispose of the city’s waste. Care must be exercised, however, as overloaded garbage trucks mean more trash on the streets.
RAILROAD DICE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Few games have left me as intrigued and with as much enthusiasm after my initial playing. Constructing rail lines and transporting passengers has never been so much fun!
RANSOM
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Negotiation and deal-making are essential in this building construction gem from Phil O'Neill.
RELATIONSHIP TIGHTROPE / DRAHTSEILAKT
Posted On: 2005-07-11
This once obscure Reiner Knizia card game has found a new lease on life with its re-release as Relationship Tightrope.
RHEINLANDER
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Yet another in the series of tile laying games from Reiner Knizia. Although somewhat enjoyable, however, this one doesn't measure up to its predecessors.
RIGAMAROLE
Posted On: 2006-03-14
While at first glance this appears to be a clever addition to the line of party games, there are too many gaps and poorly playtested aspects.
ROBIN HOOD
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Robin's merry men struggle to steal the most loot in this entertaining and challenging card game from Klaus Palesch.
ROMMEL IN THE DESERT
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Columbia's game of WWII North African warfare using their ingenious block system.
ROTTERDAM
Posted On: 2010-01-09
There is a massive dose of randomness in nearly every phase of the game, including movement, acquiring goods and contract cards, and with the shipping cards. It is simply too much, destroying any promise that the game may have held.
RUSSIAN RAILS
Posted On: 2007-05-24
Russian Rails from Mayfair Games takes the crayon rail system to the former Soviet Union. The main twist is that during the course of the game, communism may fall, which results in some minor changes in the rules. Other than that, the system is essentially the same as most other crayon rail games.
SAGA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Set in a fantasy world (like a thousand other games!), Saga relives the struggle for power to control a kingdom in turmoil. Kindoms change hands quickly, so proper planning and timing is required.
SAN FRANCISCO
Posted On: 2005-07-11
It's Alive! My good friend Mark Jackson calls this the 'Frankenstein' of games. He's not far off, as the game is a combination of mechanisms from numerous other titles.
SAN GIMIGNANO
Posted On: 2005-07-11
A game centered on the enchanting Italian hill town of San Gimignano was certainly a "must buy" for me. But was the purchase worth it?
SAVANNAH CAFE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Thirsty animals out on the Savannah rush to be the first to reach to the cafe. Memory, card-counting and calculated risks are all present in this Euro Games release.
SCARAB LORDS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Yet another Reiner Knizia 2-player game, this one set once again in ancient Egypt and filled with cards bearing beautiful artwork.
SCREAM MACHINE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Headed to a theme park? Well, this game is bulging with options, loaded with tough choices, dripping with theme and bursting with fun. Looks like I’ll be making repeated visits to this theme park for more rides on the Scream Machine.
SERENISSIMA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Trading, diplomacy and conflict during the Renaissance in this fascinating game from Euro Games.
SETTLERS OF ZARAHEMLA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Based on the immensely popular Settlers of Catan, Inspiration Games' Settlers of Zarahemla integrates a theme based on the Mormon religion.
SID MEIER'S CIVILIZATION
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Although the computer game is a classic, this boardgame adaptation leaves much to be desired.
SIENA
Posted On: 2006-07-13
While playing on a medieval tapestry is a novel and clever idea, the combination of poor graphic design choices with the appearance of some system drawbacks has left me disappointed.
SILBERZWERG
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Hi-ho, Hi-ho, it's off to work we go! No, this isn't a remake of the classic Disney film Snow White. Rather, it is a challenging game of mining caves for gems and meeting contracts.
SILK ROAD
Posted On: 2007-02-05
Silk Road is a game of decisions and resource management that is easy to learn and play. While the system includes familiar mechanisms such as quick auctions, it also has some clever and fresh innovations.
SIMPLY CATAN
Posted On: 2007-01-31
One of the more recent additions to the Settlers family is Simply Catan, marketed exclusively by Simply Fun Games as a scaled-down version of the original classic. The goal, of course, is to introduce the game to an even wider audience, which is certainly a good thing.
SNEAKS
Posted On: 2007-01-30
Remember the silly card game “Spoonsâ€, wherein players attempt to collect sets of cards and quickly grab spoons once that task is accomplished? Sneaks is a packaged version of the same game.
SOLOMON'S STONES
Posted On: 2008-08-27
There really is little, if any, tension generated during play, and there isn’t much of a sense of accomplishment when victory is achieved. The game works, but it simply isn’t exciting or terribly strategic in nature. When measured against other two-player abstracts, there are far better games to choose.
SOLOMON'S TEMPLE
Posted On: 2007-06-28
Solomon’s Temple is one of the games in their line, and is loosely based on the Old Testament account of the fabled temple of King Solomon. Two players attempt to construct and furnish Solomon’s Temple, while defending the temple against the powerful Babylonian army. Unfortunately, the story is FAR better than the game, which suffers from some poor design decisions.
SOMETHIN' FISHY
Posted On: 2007-09-06
Somethin' Fishy is meant to be light, family fare, and played in that vein, it achieves its objective. It won’t be a game you reach for with your gaming group or a gathering of adult friends, but when you have to entertain younger children and don’t want to choose a game that will leave you holding your nose, Somethin’ Fishy is a wise catch.
SPANK THE MONKEY
Posted On: 2005-07-11
In spite of an incredibly poor choice of names, there is quite a bit of wholesome fun packed into this game of ousting a michevious monkey.
SPLIT
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Yet another surprisingly entertaining and challenging release from Hasbro. Players match wits ... and card halves ... in this David Hoyt design.
SQUINT, JR.
Posted On: 2006-09-13
The main aim of Squint Junior was to make it accessible to all ages, and it accomplishes is goal admirably.
STADENS NYCKEL
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Dan Glimne's follow up to Svea Rike is flawed, but some modifications have made it an enjoyable game.
STAR WARS: EPIC DUELS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
STEEL DRIVER
Posted On: 2009-01-22
Steel Driver falls on the lighter side of Wallace’s designs.
It is certainly far less complex and strategy-laden than titles such as
Age of Steam or
Struggle of Empires, and seems on par with games such as
Union Pacific.
It seems well-positioned to appeal to a fairly wide audience, with its relative ease to learn and speed of play being additional assets.
Wallace fans seeking a deep, strategy-laden game, however, should look elsewhere.
STRUGGLE OF EMPIRES
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Struggle of Empires is a thing of beauty, a true gamer’s game. The game is overflowing with tough choices, rich flavor, and numerous strategic options.
SUCCESSION: INTRIGUE IN THE ROYAL COURT
Posted On: 2006-03-13
The concepts here are interesting, and the free-wheeling negotiations can be amusing. There is also opportunity for clever plays and maneuvers by properly timing the use of the cards you possess. Sadly, this all comes crumbling down due to the sameness of each turn, and the constant repetitiveness of the negotiations and deal-making. It is simply TOO much of a good thing.
SUCCESSORS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Alexander the Great is dead and his generals are struggling to assume control of his empire. This Avalon Hill release uses elements from the popular We the People and Hannibal series.
SUCH A THING?
Posted On: 2010-02-13
My biggest complaint against the game is that it simply isn't fun. There is no excitement, no laughter, and very little interaction. It fails as a party game at its very foundation. Party games are supposed to be fun. Such a Thing? is no such thing.
SVEA RIKE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Had enough of the German game invasion? Try this Swedish Game of the Year which recreates over 300 years of Swedish history.
SWAT!
Posted On: 2010-02-11
Swat! can be played in twenty-to-thirty minutes and is ideally suited for family play. All but the youngest of children can play competently, but there is enough fun and decisions present to keep adults entertained and engaged.
TAHUANTINSUYU
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Set in the Incan empire, players are charged with the task of expanding the kingdom, conquering neighboring tribes and establishing cities, temples and terraces. The game combines elements of crayon rail games with empire building and construction. The end result is a truly fantastic game.
TAJ MAHAL
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Herr Knizia takes us on a visit to the enchanted land of India in this intriguing game which blends a variety of mechanisms.
TAKE IT EASY
Posted On: 2009-01-22
The game never fails to elicit a variety of outbursts, and after each game, there is that inescapable feeling that you could have done better if you had just placed one tile differently, or if a desired tile had been called. There is also a nagging urge to play it again, just one more time!
TERRA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
THE ANTONI GAUDI TILE GAME
Posted On: 2005-07-11
A game based on a turn-of-the-century tile design by a Spanish architect? Yes ... and it is a surprisingly entertaining and challenging one at that!
THE DOWNFALL OF POMPEII
Posted On: 2007-03-14
For those willing to look past the dark theme, The Downfall of Pompeii offers a fun gaming experience and stands in stark contrast to the grim tragedy of the actual event.
THE THORN PRINCESS AND THE FOUR KNIGHTS
Posted On: 2008-12-09
There is a bit of opportunity for humor and role-playing, but not much … and the little that is present does not save the game. Sadly, The Thorn Princess and the Four Knights is not one of the better offerings from Japon Brand, and it is a kingdom I prefer not to visit again.
THEOPHRASTUS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Having an absolutely abysmal knowledge of most scientific fields, the name “Theophrastus” meant absolutely nothing to me. So, when I heard that Mayfair was going to be releasing a game under this name, I thought it might be some sort of Philosophy-based trivia game. I eventually learned that the game’s theme is derived from the middle-ages alchemist Theophrastus von Bombast der Hohenheim.
THURN UND TAXIS
Posted On: 2006-06-28
Andreas Seyfarth – this time teamed with his wife Karen – has done it again. He has created an entertaining and challenging game, one that is suitable for both gamers and casual play.
TICKET TO RIDE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Ticket to Ride seems destined to be another Moon gem. It seems to be an eclectic marriage of systems merged from Santa Fe, Union Pacific and TransAmerica. Unlike most celebrity marriages, however, this one works … and will likely have considerable longevity.
TIME PIRATES
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Hop back and forth in time in search of precious artifacts in this time travel game by Alan Moon and Aaron Weissblum.
TIN SOLDIERS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
"When Good Food Goes Bad". This clever card game from Al Newman goes way beyond the norm in regards to trick-taking games. The additional features and twists make for an exciting, tense game with lots of decisions to be made.
TOM TUBE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Set in a deep-space station, players rush to construct tubes, race through them and gather energy cubes. Lots of thinking and tactics are packed into this wonderful 2-player game.
TONGIAKI
Posted On: 2005-12-10
Although Tongiaki will likely never be mentioned in the same breath as games such as Puerto Rico or Princes of Florence, it is most certainly a pleasant diversion and a journey well worth taking.
TOO MANY COOKS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
No, this isn’t Andy Merritt’s homemade design from last year. Rather, it is the latest new card game from Reiner Knizia, released by R&R Games, and it is quite the entertaining romp.
TORRES
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Sometimes a second look is worth it. After a luke warm response following my first playing, I now find this Kraemer / Kiesling release to be a masterpiece.
TOTEM
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Size does matter in this quirky little game about managing and building a thriving indian tribe.
TRENDY
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Step into the world of Versace, Gucci and the super models as you attempt to establish the latest trend in the world of high fashion.
TRIANGULAR
Posted On: 2006-03-16
While the rules and components are quite simple, Triangular is an EXCELLENT 2-player abstract game that is highly addicting.
TRIAS
Posted On: 2006-08-17
Set in the Triassic period during the break-up of Pangea, Trias is a true joy, filled with tough choices and clever movement opportunities.
TWILIGHT IMPERIUM
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Diplomacy, politics and conflict in deep space in this wonderful inaugural game from Fantasy Flights.
TYCOON
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Game of flight connections, money management and hotel and factory construction by Wolfgang Kramer, the designer of El Grande.
TYRUS
Posted On: 2005-07-11
While pleasant enough, the central mechanism of "blind placement" is just too much for me.
URSUPPE
Posted On: 2005-07-11
The never-ending struggle for survival in the primordial soup is recreated in this lively and entertaining release from Doris & Frank.
UTOPIA
Posted On: 2008-05-21
While it may not live up to the heights suggested by its name, Utopia is still a fine game, even if it does fall short of gaming nirvana.
VASCO DA GAMA
Posted On: 2010-02-11
Even if I ultimately do not enjoy the game itself, I am always delighted when I find a game that has an original mechanism. When the game proves to be thoroughly engaging, challenging and tense, then it will likely be a big hit and become a personal favorite. Vasco da Gama by designer Paolo Mori shows every sign of becoming just that – a personal favorite.
VENEZIA
Posted On: 2005-07-11
If you've ever been to Venice, you will know it is inundated by pigeons. What a great theme for a game!
VENUS NEEDS MEN!
Posted On: 2007-04-10
From the retro artwork on the box cover, to the sci-fi storyline and theme, Venus Needs Men! from designer John Velonis and Synelix Games evokes the feel and atmosphere of campy 1950s and 1960s science fiction movies. Sadly, while I give the game high marks for a fun theme, I am disappointed in the game play and significant flaws.
VICTORY & HONOR
Posted On: 2005-07-11
For folks who enjoy trick-taking games, Victory & Honor is simply superb. It is quite likely the pinnacle of the genre.
VIKING FURY
Posted On: 2005-11-16
A new game from the Ragnar Brothers, creators of such games as History of the World and Kings & Castles … and the game carries a Viking theme. The result? A must-buy.
VIKINGATID
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Raid, pillage and plunder in this wonderful, albeit lengthy, game from Sweden.
VOX POPULI
Posted On: 2005-07-11
Vox Populi … the Voice of the People! The fate of gladiators in ancient Rome could often depend upon the whims of the people. Tilset's game based on this ancient voting practice fails to live up to the drama of the history it attempts to recreate.
WALLENSTEIN
Posted On: 2005-07-11
A German game with a heavy "war" theme? Yes, and the end result is quite satisfying, producing a game wrought with tension and requiring careful thought, planning and decisions.
WAYFINDER
Posted On: 2007-03-26
Wayfinder is a decidedly abstract game with clever mechanisms. However, it is not an easy game to learn or play well.
WINDS OF PLUNDER
Posted On: 2007-07-05
Set in the Caribbean in the days of sail, players represent dastardly pirates, plundering the islands and, when the opportunity arises, their fellow pirates.
ZOMBIES
Posted On: 2005-07-11
If you're a fan of the 'Dawn of the Dead' movie series, then you ought to enjoy the spirit of this shoot 'em, light game. Sadly, the game itself leaves much to be desired.
